The first elements of the enclosing structure – steel segments for the assembly of the reactor cavity first two tiers – have been delivered to the construction site of PDEC Proryv in Tomsk region.

The works will be performed by the JSC MSU-90 fitters. Currently they are preparing the stands for the preassembly that will take place in three sites near the reactor building. The segments placed on them will be tightened by large bolts and the connection areas will be welded from the inside and outside. This is how steel rings with inner diameter of 25 meters are built. Later, they will be interconnected by welding and placed into the reactor cavity.

The company’s specialists have to perform six types of joints with an overall length of around three kilometers. It will take about nine months to assemble and install the structures with the weight of more than 400 tons.

Prior to the placement of the steel rings into the reactor cavity, the construction workers have to build a two meter high concrete pedestal for the BREST reactor. Steel supporting slab and an enclosing structure reaching the height of 12 meters above zero elevation will be installed on the pedestal. Then, the area between the inner and outer walls of the structure will be poured with a special heat-resistant concrete thus becoming the first tier of the reactor protection.
